Longtime Irvington and Northeast Coalition volunteer Michael O’Malley died last month, succumbing to cardiac arrest brought on by a bad reaction to medication for pneumonia. “It was very sudden,” his wife Aina told the Star. O’Malley served on the Northeast Coalition board for 24 years, including one term as chair, and in his own Irvington Community Association for longer than that. He was also involved in various other projects. For instance, he was part of the GREAT Committee, which in 2004 re-wrote the regulations governing Portland neighborhood associations over the course of a four-year process. In 1998, when the national organization Neighborhoods U.S.A. held its annual convention in Portland, O’Malley chaired a committee that coordinated a series of 28 tours of Portland and Vancouver neighborhoods, each put together and conducted by neighborhood volunteers; by large numbers the visitors declared the tours to be the best part of the convention. The Northeast Coalition board gave Aina a plaque posthumously recognizing her husband’s contributions.
