Not everyone could get a Spirit of Portland Award, and Concordia Neighborhood Association land-use chair George Bruender was passed over. However, his fellow board members, feeling something was due, gave him a Spirit of Concordia Award at their annual meeting.
Bruender over the years has provided his community with expertise, leadership, and a problem-solving outlook. Nor has he confined himself to Concordia; he has worked with adjacent communities such as Cully and Vernon on issues such as the impact of “box hauler” freight airplanes, “skinny house” development and very tall buildings on Northeast Alberta Street. He also deals with regional issues as part of the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods Livability Committee. For his efforts, and in appreciation of his desire to learn more, the association gave Bruender a gift certificate for Powell’s Books.
