First of all, I wanted to say “thanks” and give a compliment to the writer Mara Stine on a most interesting article on Northeast barbers. (Local barbers a cut above, November 2008).
But I’d like to put in a plug for Gary Gleason, my barber for 10-15 years, at 8403 N.E. Fremont , (503) 257-3631. He gives an excellent haircut. It’s always by appointment (no sitting and waiting), usually on the hour or half-hour. It is reasonable. For seniors, like myself, the price is $9.
For the sports fan, there is memorabilia and team and individual pictures adorning the walls. One of Gleason’s steady customers is N.F.L. quarterback Joey Harrington, who gets his hair cut there when he is in town. Since the shop is close to Madison High School, it includes photos of many of the school’s past and present athletes; and Madison graduates continue to get their hair cut there. The shop also includes a fairly large TV for viewing sports and other programs.
