In a recent, slightly less-than-scientific survey, people at the Northeast Community Center (NECC) were asked why they came to the NECC and what they liked about it. Their comments, edited for brevity (no money exchanged hands):
Curt Cooley: “Although I just turned 74, I like to play basketball with the young guys. I’ve been a member for about eight years, and I commute 25 miles to play three times a week. I like the camaraderie. All the guys are really nice, but they don’t take it easy on me. It’s low-key and everyone gets along great. I hope to keep playing as long as my ace bandages hold out.”
Rod Bullier: “I just joined recently to get in shape. I used to swim here as a little kid, and when I saw the pool again I thought they must have cut it in half. As a boy it seemed huge to me. There have been a lot of changes since I was first here. I checked out other fitness places and liked the NECC best.”
Margaret Davis: “I love the Zumba class on Fridays. It’s fabulous. But what I like best is the free child care for members. Without that I wouldn’t be able to come here. I’m at the NECC almost every day. The people are great – I see a lot of faces I recognize from the NECC when I’m shopping and out in the neighborhood.”
Isabella Trepiccione: “We moved here 17 years ago from New York. I’ve been coming ever since – I walk here five times a week. I’m in the Dance & Movement class and Circuit Training. The instructors, Lynn and Kathy, are absolutely wonderful. It’s a close-knit group of people, and I’ve made a lot of friends. It’s been a blessing for me.”
Andrew Roberson (“St. Andrew”): “The NECC has been a life support for me. I’m in the Water Aerobics class. When I’m in the water it rejuvenates me – I always feel better afterwards. The people here are great role models. They’re amazing – they keep me in motion. If you stop being active, you’re buggered. There are closer places to my home I could go, but I like it here.”
Julia Colson: “We’re not members, yet, but we come here for my daughter’s swim lessons. She loves coming here. The NECC came highly recommended by our neighbors, and they were right. It’s a nice, friendly place.”
Catherine Colson (age 6): “I like swimming here. I can do somersaults in the water, and I’m learning to dive. I can swim from one end to the other. Side breathing is my favorite. The water’s warm, and it’s easy to meet kids.”
NECC offers one month free
To expand its membership, the NECC is now offering a special for new members. Anyone who joins before June 30th will receive one month free. They also get a free NECC water bottle, not to mention the opportunity to meet many interesting and friendly people like the ones quoted above. There’s no joining fee, and monthly dues are kept as affordable as possible for individuals and families. Call or stop by the NECC soon to take advantage of this limited-time membership offer.
