The Portland Bureau of Transportation is working on the creation of new Bike Boulevards, including one extending from North Vancouver to Northeast 67th avenues, going most of the way on Northeast Klickitat Street. According to planner Kyle Chisek, in response to neighborhood residents and the Portland Parks Bureau, the route has been altered to some degree from the original plan. Current plans call for westbound riders to shift southward one block, at 17th Avenue, to Siskiyou Street, shift further south at Seventh Avenue to Morris Street, and take this to Vancouver. The Klickitat Mall east of Irving Park is in a poor state of maintenance, while the Parks Bureau is not happy with bikes traversing the heavily-used Irving Park.
Bike Boulevards utilize streets with low traffic volumes where cars and bikes can co-exist peacefully without the use of exclusive lanes. PBOT is planning 14 new such routes, including one along Northeast Going Street and three eastside north-south routes, one along Ninth Avenue and two others traveling somewhere in the 20s- and 50s-numbered streets. In addition, Chisek says, the bureau is looking at improvements along existing boulevards, including one on Northeast Tillamook Street.
