Starting July 6, and through September 10, the Broadway Bridge will be shut to auto traffic due to construction of the new Portland Streetcar east side loop extension. In addition, consultant Julie Gustafson told the Central East Side Urban Renewal Advisory Committee, there will be lane closures on the west side of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Oregon and Couch streets – this is to create a new streetcar-only lane for this part of the route and, to replace the parking, cut into the sidewalk, removing part of the Oregon Convention Center awning and some street trees. Most of the construction on existing streets should be done by August of next year, she said.
Meanwhile, Chris Armes, project manager of the Burnside-Couch Couplet project, said that two crews are working on the north side of East Burnside Street – now one-way eastbound – and should be done by the end of July. Then they will take up the south side of the street. The entire project should be done by October, she said.
