In a sparkling display of fundraising spirit, the Northeast Community Center (NECC) is once again selling Fourth of July fireworks to raise money for NECC youth programs. The NECC TNT fireworks stand is located in the NECC parking lot at the corner of Northeast 37th Avenue and Broadway, across from MBank.
If you plan to buy fireworks to celebrate our nation’s birthday, consider buying them from the NECC, which is offering a wide selection of ooh- and ahh-inspiring fireworks.
Fireworks sale hours: July 1-4: 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Half-price sale: July 5, 9 a.m.-noon. Proceeds from the fundraising event will help keep costs down for swimming classes and other NECC youth programs.
The NECC is a local nonprofit that relies on membership dues, donations and fundraising to serve members and the community. Volunteers are an integral part of the growth and success of the NECC. Recently, the NECC hired a part-time volunteer coordinator, Heather Wilkinson, to assist in recruiting and organizing volunteers. You don’t have to be a NECC member to volunteer at the Center. NECC Summer Festival
Expanding upon last year’s fledgling Arts & Crafts Fair, the NECC will hold a Summer Festival on Saturday, August 14. The NECC Summer Festival will feature a Family Fun Walk, various arts and crafts, musicians, activities, food and drink, and more. It will be held outside on the parking lot and inside the NECC.
The Summer Festival Family Fun Walk is open to all ages. Those who register by August 1st will be guaranteed a free T-shirt. Anyone registering after August 1st can participate but is not guaranteed a shirt. All registrants are eligible for a raffle drawing; registration is $10 each, regardless of age. You can register at the NECC front desk anytime after July 15th. For more information, contact Carolyn at gro.r1502949158etnec1502949158ytinu1502949158mmoce1502949158n@skr1502949158amc1502949158.

Girl Strength gets strong interest
Much as they did with their Women Strength classes held at the NECC, the Portland Police Department will present a Girl Strength self-defense program August 16 – 20. This series of classes for girls 10-14 years old is free and includes non-physical strategies as well as physical skills. It is as much about empowerment as self-defense. Topics covered include awareness, assertiveness, building confidence, and demystifying fear around safety. The August Girl Strength session is full, but the NECC plans to offer a fall session with dates still to be determined.
The Northeast Community Center, 1630 N. E. 38th Ave., features a gym, pool, weights, circuit training, yoga, dance, arts and crafts, active older adult programs – plus a good supply of healthy, friendly folks. Stop by for a tour and receive a free, one-day guest pass. For more information, call (503) 284-3377 or visit necommunitycenter.org.
