Portland has a reputation for having a nice downtown, parades, the Rose Festival, fine eateries and the waterfront. So I decided to move back to Portland, specifically to the Hollywood District. I lived here in the late 1970s, moved out of state and then moved back. I do have fond memories and enjoy Hollywood’s atmosphere. But! That all said and done, having lived here for less than two years since moving back, I’ve been a victim of burglary three times!
The first burglary took place outside my front door. The second took place at the 7-Eleven at Northeast 47th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard. The most recent burglary took place on June 9, 2010 at Fred Meyer off Broadway.
Where I work (Rite Aid, 1814 N.E. 41st Ave.) is rampant with thefts. I’m writing this letter because not only am I a victim, I’m sure many of you are, as well. It is the local news for people who live/work/shop in this part of town. Living here almost seems like living in a prison because I now have my garden ornaments chained to the ground; and, if I don’t lock my car, I know I’ll be victimized again. I hope the editor of the Star News prints this letter so that when people read it they will talk amongst themselves, hopefully become more aware of who/what is around them and help protect each other against people who take advantage of good, honest, hard-working Hollywood District residents. – Maggy Constantino
