The Hollywood Senior Center in Northeast Portland will mark its 40th anniversary with several activities scheduled the week of October 14. “A kick-off celebration from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., October 14 will get things rolling,” said Amber Kern-Johnson, Center executive director.
“Everyone is invited — seniors and seniors-to-be. We’d like all ages to stop by to meet some of our active participants and learn more about the Center and what it does in the community.” Monday’s events start with an on-going slide show of the Center’s history, followed by an anniversary cake-cutting and remarks by local dignitaries from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Music and dancing will run until 6 p.m. A health and wellness fair will be held Wednesday, October 16, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will include free health screenings by the Lions Mobile Health and Screening van.
Visitors can have vision, diabetes, glaucoma, blood pressure, hearing and other screenings done. Portland Urgent Care will offer flu shots, while Providence Elder Place and the Marie Smith Center will provide informational displays as well as nutritional and home safety presentations.
“We’ve lined up a group of vendors that will cover a range of topics such as preparing for an emergency, dating after age 50 and fall prevention,” Kern-Johnson said. “We’ll have something to interest everyone, including the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, which is on board to discuss traditional Chinese medicine. Plus there’ll be lots of door prizes.”
The Center’s 40th Anniversary open house will be held October 17, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and feature door prizes, live music, wine tasting courtesy of Wine Fauve and appetizers. “This is a chance for people to see what the Center does and for us to better understand how we can better serve the interests of older adults in the community,” Kern-Johnson said.
“We know our demographic is changing as baby boomers continue to retire. We, at the Center, want to be there for that generation as we have for previous ones.” The week’s activities wrap up on Saturday with a 40th Anniversary pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. “In addition to bacon, eggs and all-you-can-eat pancakes for $4, we’ll have music and door prizes. We hope people will stop by,” Kern-Johnson said.
