Starting with this issue, Phill Colombo will serve as the community development reporter for the Hollywood Star News. Since the mid-1970s, Colombo, a New York native, has lived in Northeast Portland. He now resides in the Roseway Neighborhood with Jackie, his wife of more than four decades. Colombo has two grown children and two grandchildren and works part-time for the Portland Bureau of Parks & Recreation as SUN Community School instructor. At Beaumont Middle School, he monitors an afternoon homework club and advises a business club and the staff of Bobcat Prints, Beaumont’s monthly student newspaper.

Colombo routinely assists non-profits by drafting news releases and public information plans. Recent pro-bono work has included his parish, St. Rose of Lima in the Rose City Park Neighborhood, the Portland Chamber Orchestra and East Portland Rotary.

From September 2004 through January 2008, Colombo was administrator of a non-profit home school and served as Catholic Broadcasting Northwest executive director and general manager of KBVM-FM. He worked at TriMet for more than 20 years as public information manager, operations information manager and service planning coordinator before “retiring” in 2001. Colombo’s public administration career was preceded by work as a broadcast journalist for stations in New York and Oregon.

Colombo holds a 1967 general studies B.A. from Villanova University, a 1997 public administration M.A. from Portland State University (PSU) and has completed doctoral classes in public administration and policy at PSU’s Hatfield School of Government.  He is most interested in how public involvement might be improved by strategies and programs aimed at citizens, administrators, students and educators.

Colombo has served as co-chair of the Chief’s Forum, a group of citizens and Portland Police Bureau employees who once advised Portland’s chief of police. He has been a member of the publicity committee for the Portland Chamber Orchestra, where he previously served as treasurer and as board president, and has also served as president of Catholic Broadcasting Northwest and chaired the Roseway Neighborhood Association, St. Rose Parish Council and St. Charles School Board.
