The 23 Sandy Gallery has announced its “Best of Show” and “Purchase Prize” awards from EcoEditions, the gallery’s international juried exhibition of contemporary artist books.
Cara List of the University of Oregon juried the show, which drew artists from around the world to comment on the state of the environment, ecology, sustainability, pollution, climate, recycling and the planet in general.
The three “Best of Show” winners include Canadian artist Guylaine Couture’s movable wheel book, “Which Side I Choose.” A second is Bob Pliny’s painted book, “For the Disappeared Ones,” featuring a Buddhist mantra expressing the wish that all beings find refuge in compassion. It is paired with the names, extinction dates and drawings of creatures who became extinct between 9740 BCE and 2012 AD.
The third winner is Mary Uthuppuru’s “Destiny of Choice,” which looks at decisions that contribute to garbage in our environment.
The “Purchase Prize” winner, Lisa Onstad, will see her flag book, “Submerged,” purchased by 23 Sandy Gallery and donated to the artist book collection at the University of Oregon’s Architecture and Allied Arts Library. Onstad’s book chronicles the 1957 disappearance of Celilo Falls with the construction of The Dalles Dam on the Columbia River.
