Uwem Etuk was a third grader at Trinity Lutheran School last year when he told his father, Ime Etuk, that he wanted to be his school’s winner in the National Geographic Bee, or Geo Bee,for geographic knowledge.
This year, as a fourth grader, he took the top spot in his school at 5520 N.E. Killingsworth St.
His father said, “He worked really hard to prepare to compete against eighth graders.”
Uwem came in first, followed by Ezra Riedl, who came in second, and Elijah Oden-Orr who was in third place. With the first round of the contest behind him, Uwem will take a written test administered to other first-place school winners. Up to 100 of the top scorers on that test will then be eligible to compete in the state bee on March 27.
State winners will have an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the national championship rounds May 11-13.
