Jeffrey Weissler, proprietor of the cozy and eclectic Pairings Portland store in Kerns, celebrated the two-year anniversary of ‘Portland’s weirdest wine shop’ in March.
After two years in the well-trafficked space at 24th and Glisan, across the street from Kevin Cavenaugh’s micro-restaurant project The Ocean, Weissler has made quite an impression on the neighborhood with his wine shop, bar and classroom. And not just with the mirrored disco-ball hanging from the ceiling.
“One of my favorite things about this shop is sticking my head out the door and inviting neighbors to come inside and try some wine,” Weissler said. “I like to surprise people with wine in ways that are fun and engaging. That light a spark. A lot of wine culture is steeped in pretension. This store’s mission is to totally blow up that construct. To make pretension fun.”
Weissler, who developed a following as a blogger at consciouswine.com – where he preaches the gospel of organic, sustainably-farmed wines – can pair literally anything with an appropriate wine.
Lists of possible pairings that blanket the shop’s colorful, chalkboard walls include characters from Game of Thrones, the Portland Trailblazer’s starting line-up and animals from the Chinese zodiac.
On a recent visit, Weissler explained to a trio of guests how the wine they were drinking was perfectly aligned with the Depeche Mode song he was about to play for them.
Customers can purchase a pre-paired bottle from Weissler’s cellar or select from daily by-the-glass offerings. Weissler also hosts regular events, including tasting classes, potlucks and dance parties.
