Neighborhood realtor and developer Rambo Halpern is putting the finishing touches on a food cart pod scheduled to open later this spring, on a lot adjacent to the bustling Pollo Norte and Nepo 42 restaurants.
Halpern purchased the former scrap-metal yard in January of 2014. The two combined commercial lots offered four structures in various states of neglect: a house which was renovated and rented, a garage which has been converted into office space and leased, and a derelict commercial building which is now home to Pollo Norte.
A shed was taken down to clear space for the final stage of the project, a food cart area with a beer garden. Halpern is now considering applications for the food cart spaces. Rates will be from $400 to $700 per spot and include utilities and the use of an ADA bathroom in the commercial building.
“We are really looking forward to turning what was once a run down lot with a metal scrap yard into an asset for the community,” Halpern said. “We’ve had a great neighborhood reaction and support for this project. Our hope is to develop something that scales appropriately to the neighborhood and that can employ and house local residents.”
