Dawn Ades, owner of Just 4 Kids, will celebrate 20 years of business this month.
To mark the occasion, the Hollywood district children’s consignment shop will hold a store-wide sale Friday, May 15 through Saturday, May 16.
Ades, a Portland native and Grant High alumnus, opened the store in 1995 as an inexpensive way to clothe her four children and to provide for her family. Those children — Windie, Andre, Adrian and Brittany — are grown now. They all worked in the shop growing up. The oldest daughter, Windie, still works in the store a couple of days a month.
Ades is now a grandmother with four grandsons and two granddaughters. She has seen generations of families come through the shop, searching for affordable, gently-worn clothing. Just 4 Kids now has more than 5,000 consignors, who receive store credit for the items they sell.
“We have several consignors who originally shopped here for their children and now come in and shop for their grandchildren,” Ades said. “I really appreciate all the support we’ve gotten from the neighborhood and from the community for all these years.”
Ades has one employee, Pat Clark, who has been with the shop all twenty years and another, Sarhris Barton, who has been there for a little less than two years.
Will Just 4 Kids still be in the neighborhood twenty years from now?
“I don’t know if I can do another twenty,” Ades said. “I do hope resale continues to be a conscious effort for families. It’s a sustainable way to benefit both the consignor and the customer. It can make parenting a little more affordable.”
