In March, Kern’s neighborhood chef Anh Luu of Tapalaya made a winning appearance on the Food Network’s “Chopped” program in an episode billed as “T.G.I. Fry-Day.”
The episode focused on “deep-fried deliciousness” and challenged contestants with ingredients that included hot dogs, taro root, cookies and cube steak.
Each round, evaluated by the judges, featured an appetizer, entree and dessert. Luu had a strong finish, making it to the dessert round, and the judges declared her dessert “the best dish of the night.”
As a result, the Tapalaya restaurant has a new dessert on the menu: “Chef Anh Luu’s Best Dish of the Night Dessert on Chopped.” The dish features fried biscuits with coconut and lime-apple compote, serrano chili, salted caramel sauce and mint.
A combination of the words tapas and jambalaya, Tapalaya is located at 28 N.E. 28th Ave. Lunch and dinner are served daily from 11:30 a.m. For reservations or more information, call 503-232-6652.
