Gloria and Aaron Settlemier of Settlemier’s Award Jackets and Heidi Settlemier of Alameda Realty hosted the May open house for the Hollywood Boosters, as part of the Booster’s open house series, in the family-owned factory and retail shop at 4929 N.E. Fremont St. in Beaumont Village.
The Settlemeier shop began as a small embroidery-lettering business in Gloria’s basement in 1990 and has now grown to a company that provides 14 to 18 local jobs for skilled craftspeople and delivers traditional, high-quality, American-made varsity jackets to locations throughout the United States.
Gloria moved the business to its current location in 1993 and is now transitioning ownership and operation of the company to her son, Aaron. Gloria’s mother, Dorothy Nelson, also owned a local, varsity jacket-business, Nelson Jackets, so this will be the third generation of the family in the business.
The location of the retail shop on Fremont affords customers the opportunity to walk in and order a custom-made and sized, individual jacket, starting at $175.
“You can walk in here and order a high-quality, Pendleton wool jacket with genuine, cowhide leather for less than what you’d pay for a nationally-retailed, varsity-style jacket made overseas,” said Gloria.
The company also embroiders shirts, jackets, hats and specialty patches and has an additional outlet shop in Hillsboro.
Every year, the Settlemeiers donate letters to local high schools, including Grant, Madison, Jefferson, Franklin, Cleveland and Central Catholic.
“I love making the jackets,” said Gloria. “It’s a product that truly makes customers happy and gives them an heirloom that they can enjoy for many generations. We hope to be making the best athletic jacket for the best student athletes and athletic providers all over the country for years to come.”
