The Husens, who live with their three children just a few blocks from the location, are completing a full-bore renovation of the 1,600-square-foot space, which was previously home to a Game Shack video game store and, before that, Tarala Floors.
The renovation will be divided into two areas, a cafe space that will offer sofas, armchairs and table-seating for 29, and an approximately 800-square-foot play space that will provide an art station, train table, doll house, large play house with two slides – and more toys and activities to encourage creative and dramatic play.
“Neighborhood is our passion,” said Kayla Husen. “We are invested in making play, community, and comfort come together in a fun environment. We’ll offer quality local pastries, coffee, food, beer, and wine with free WiFi to enjoy while your children play in a fun and safe space.”
Pastries will be sourced from Rose City Park’s Bakeshop, and Molly’s Salads will provide local, organic breakfast items, sandwiches, wraps and soups. Molly’s Salads offers a program where products that are not sold are purchased back and donated to local homeless shelters.
In another effort to make life a little easier for busy families, the cafe will offer curbside coffee pick up for online orders. Monday through Friday mornings, coffee and espresso can be ordered online for pick up on Northeast 72nd Avenue, next to the building.
“No need to get out, stand in line or walk through the mud,” said Kayla Husen. “Our baristas will bring your to-go order to you curbside.”
The cafe will also have an event room available for birthday parties, both during business hours and after, and larger parties can reserve the entire cafe. Plans are in place to host story-time groups, mom’s meet ups and wine and art classes.
“We want Roseway Play Cafe to be a place where local families can come and have a safe place for their little ones to play while they relax, work, or participate in community events,” said Kayla Husen.
Beginning September 8, the Husens will offer onsite, preschool classes for students between the ages of three and five.
Starting this month, the Roseway Play Cafe will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 5:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Fridays from 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The cafe will be available on Sundays for reserved events.
