In May, Jennifer Darling joined the Northeast Community Center as the Adult Fitness and Wellness Coordinator. Darling is passionate about creating effective fitness and wellness classes and programs, promoting healthful lifestyles and improving the health and well-being of NECC’s neighbors and those who live, work and play in Northeast Portland. Darling is a resident of Northeast Portland, and her love of fitness extends into her daily life. You may catch sight of her running a local half-marathon, hiking in the Columbia River Gorge, or on an urban adventure with her two children.
Darling came to the Pacific Northwest in 1997. While she earned both a BA in Interpersonal and Public Communication and an MA in Theatre Arts at Portland State University, Darling ultimately fell in love with running and developed a passion for fitness. In the past five years, she assembled a diverse fitness resume. Before joining the NECC, Darling could be found teaching group fitness classes throughout the Metro area. From prenatal fitness and Baby Boot Camp, to Cardio Kickboxing and Practical Yoga, she has taught classes and worked with clients of all ages and abilities. Most recently, she has been working with the City of Portland’s Wellness Program, teaching classes and focusing on implementing creative wellness programming to serve city employees.
NECC’s Executive Director, Kim Montagriff, is excited for Darling to join the NECC’s team. “Jennifer brings remarkable experience, enthusiasm, dedication, and warmth, and she is a tremendous fit for the NECC. I am looking forward to working with Jennifer as the NECC continues to promote health and wellness in our community,” Montagriff said.
Darling’s primary goals are to bring more community members to the NECC and help them reach their fitness and wellness goals in a supportive environment, and to find opportunities to reach out to the community and connect NECC’s programs to a broader audience of adults with varying ages and physical abilities. Darling’s passion and commitment are apparent: “I went into fitness to help people change their lives. The NECC is a community-minded organization with a focus on wellness, and I look forward to having an opportunity to serve this broader community.”
The NECC currently has a successful and varied list of fitness classes and wellness programs, boasting nearly 40 classes of Yoga, Tai Chi, Circuit Training, Zumba, Cardio, Pilates, Aerobics, and full body conditioning classes held in the facility each week. In addition, the NECC hosts a monthly presentation on nutrition, and provides specialty classes such as Parkinson’s Exercise, Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance, and classes for active older adults. Jennifer will continue this flourishing programming while expanding upon those offerings in a way that best meets the diversity of adult fitness and wellness needs in our community.
