As temperatures may reach into the triple digits, Hollywood Senior Center will open as a Cooling Center for those 55 or older through Monday evening. The center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26; from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27; from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28; and from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29. Beverages and snacks will be provided for those seeking a break from the excessive heat. Free senior movies will show each day (Friday at 4:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and Sunday and Monday at 5:00 p.m.)
“As temperatures rise, the need for an air-conditioned space becomes even greater,” said Hollywood Senior Center Executive Director Amber Kern-Johnson. “Seniors are at a higher risk for heat-related illness, such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration. The Cooling Center provides a place to cool off from the intense heat. Even a few hours in an air conditioned space can make a tremendous difference.”
Hollywood Senior Center is located at 1820 N.E. 40th Ave. in Portland. The phone number is 503-288-8303.
The Hollywood Senior Center is looking for donations of bottled water, fruit and snacks to serve during Senior Cooling Center Hours.
