A new mural project at the Blind Onion Pizza and Pub on Northeast Broadway is nearing completion and should be done in a month or so. Owner Mark Hutsell recruited the pub’s assistant manager Joel Kelley, a skateboard illustrator and screen printer, to paint over a dated, 10-year-old mural in the restaurant’s dining room. The project got underway in February and the mural will feature the pub’s iconic mascot, Fred T. Onion, as a wizard flying through space.
“This will be my first big mural,” said Kelley. “I wanted to have something with a lot of black background so outer space worked for that. I have always loved wizards so I squeezed that into the theme too.”
Blind Onion is a neighborhood pizza establishment and has been a popular community hangout at its Broadway location for nearly 20 years.
“We offer pizza, sandwiches, salads, and craft beers in a casual, nostalgic atmosphere,” said Hutsell. “We have microbrew pints for just $3.50 daily, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. to close. We have free anchovies on Tuesdays and every week our staff creates a specially-priced Pizza of the Week – like jalapeno with pineapple and chicken.”
In honor of the pub’s mascot, if your name is Fred, the pub will offers $1.00 off the regular price of draft beer at any time.
