On June 15, Nick and Allison Morton opened their new, early childhood center, Small Wonders School, at 3634 N.E. Sandy Blvd. in the Laurelhurst neighborhood on the edge of the Hollywood District.
According to Allison Morton, the school started with two smaller Certified Family Programs in neighborhood homes and has been a hit in the Northeast community. The school was voted Metro Parent’s magazine “family favorite” for 2014-15.
The Mortons worked with Greg Behnke of Investment Protection Services to renovate the 4,180-square-foot space.
“Greg was able to work within the confines of our SBA loan without compromising quality or asking us to make cuts – and also met our incredibly tight timeline,” said Allison Morton. “He was hands on with our project and very communicative. So much so that our own toddler, Adelaide, began to make play phone calls, ‘Hi, Greg. Yes, yes. Build, Greg!’”
The new space is outfitted with custom wood play pieces, including play kitchens and sensory tables from Heartwood Natural Toys of Eugene. Families enter through an atelier and art studio, with three classrooms in the back of the building.
The center will be licensed for up to 60 children, ages 24 months to kindergarten- qualifying age. The staff will include 15 full-time positions. The hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some slots are still available and open houses will be held throughout the summer. Visit www.smallwondersschool.org for more information.
