Green Zebra Grocery has announced plans to open a second store in the Lloyd District as anchor tenant for the Hassalo on Eighth development. Green Zebra’s first store, in Portland’s Kenton neighborhood, has been open for nearly two years. The emerging, Portland-based chain has plans to open four more locations in the next two years.
The company, whose stated mission is to “increase access to healthy food,” purchases sustainably-raised, local and organic products from over 60 Pacific Northwest growers, ranchers, fishers and vendors. Green Zebra is pioneering a new model of convenience store offering fresh food, healthy products, and prepared foods, cooked from scratch, in the store’s small footprint.
The space for the Lloyd District grocery will be 8,203 square feet in size and will open in early 2016. The new store will offer local produce, sustainable meat and seafood, a full deli and salad bar, beer and wine, everyday grocery items, a coffee and tea bar and seating for lunch and dinner.
“We are thrilled to welcome Green Zebra to Hassalo on Eighth,” said John Chamberlain, American Assets president and CEO. “Green Zebra is the perfect addition for our new development, and will quickly become a favorite shopping destination for local residents and office workers in the Lloyd District.”
“We love the Lloyd neighborhood and we’re super-enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring healthy, local, organic foods to eaters in the neighborhood,” said Lisa Sedlar, Green Zebra’s founder and CEO. “In addition to serving the residents of Hassalo on Eighth and the Lloyd District, our small-format store will be convenient for our neighbors in Sullivan’s Gulch, Irvington and the Central Eastside, as well as the thousands of folks who work in the neighborhood.”
“It feels great to be part of the Lloyd District’s transformation to a more vibrant, active, healthy, eco-neighborhood,” said Sedlar. “We estimate that half of our eaters will get to our store by walking, biking or public transportation.”
The Hassalo on Eighth project is located to the west of Lloyd Center and will offer three, mixed-use buildings: a six-story building with 177 apartments, a 21-story tower with 337 apartments and a five-story building comprised of 143 apartments and retail. All three structures will feature retail space on the ground floors. The project will use a number of innovative green technologies, including recycling and reusing all wastewater and will offer over 1,000 bike parking spaces with a bike valet.
