We sure missed you during our three-week closure last month. We know you missed us, too — we have heard that loud and clear. Thank you for your kind words. It’s nice to be missed.
Another way we can tell you missed us is that on the day we reopened, August 31, our door count was 1,758. For a little perspective, we average anywhere from 900 to 1,000 people passing through our doors every day. Since people typically return books and other materials when they visit the library, more visits means more books to check in and return to circulation for other patrons. We can tell a day’s been busy by the way our bones ache when the door count nears the 1,200 mark, so at 1,758, we were feeling it by day end.
Here are some fun facts about materials movement during our closure. On the night before we reopened, all those items you’d placed on hold for pickup at Hollywood had accumulated to the tune of 113 crates. The average number of items per crate is 45. Materials that belong to Hollywood but were returned at another location were piled up in an even bigger mountain — 330 crates — so many that the majority had to be stored in a non-library county building. That is many, many hours of re-shelving represented there. At the time I write this, we have finished all the accumulated crates of holds (much faster than we thought it could ever happen) and there are about 274 non-hold crates left to unpack. But, what about new materials, you ask? There were an additional 31 crates of brand new items to check in.
And here we are, back in our building, a nice new carpet with not a single tear, no trip hazards, no tape patches, no latte stains. It’s fresh and new and clean. What will we do with all those spare rolls of duct tape?
