After months of renovation, there are some new tenants coming to Jim Spivak’s Hollywood Mall building at 1925 N.E. 42nd Ave. The three spaces at the west end of the building will continue to be occupied by children’s re-seller Just 4 Kids, coffee, tea and juice bar Nectar Cafe, and Teal Flamingo hair salon, vintage and consignment store. The space at the east end of the building, former home to The Cleanery dry-cleaning and laundry, is now the temporary headquarters for the team from Emery & Sons Construction Group, who will be performing sewer maintenance work in the Grant Park neighborhood and surrounding areas for the next 18 to 24 months.
According to Project Manager Stephen Holmes, Emery & Sons will be in the space for the duration of the project. Spivak will begin looking for a new tenant after the Emery team moves out. While one of the spaces is still for lease (and interested tenants can call Spivak at 503-284-9346 for more information), the remaining space will soon be home to a toy store.
Dave Hillis and his wife Christi plan to open Portland Pastimes in the space before Thanksgiving. Portland Pastimes will be a traditional toy store, offering new, old and educational toys with a mix of games, puzzles, kites and magic.
“Our goal is to be the neighborhood toy store,” said Hillis. “Whether you’re just killing time and want to entertain your kids or if you need a quick birthday gift. We’ll have a table-top arcade game on free play, so if you want to try and beat my Pac Man or Defender high score, bring it on!”
“I have always loved toys,” said Hillis. “When I was twelve my parents opened a toy store in Nevada City, California. It was a great way to grow up and I spent a large part of my youth at that store.
It gave me lots of time to practice magic tricks, work on my juggling skills – and it helped me in my first career as a Hacky Sack player.”
“I spent much of my late teens and early twenties playing competitive footbag,” said Hillis. “From there I moved into my second career, aviation. I loved flying and all the adventures it brought me but being a professional pilot can make family life challenging. I walked away from flying for the high-flying adventures of being a stay at home dad. I now know all the lyrics to every Raffi song. For the last four years I have been working with Intel in Hillsboro. After all that, I am finally going back into the family business!”
Hillis will take possession of the Hollywood space on Oct 1 and plans for a grand opening party when improvements for the store are completed.
