Sisters Dee Dee Ploog and Michelle Berlin have opened Found and Floral, a home decor and gift shop, in the 42nd Street Station building in Hollywood. Berlin also has an art studio in the back of the shop. The sisters leased the space in May and opened in June.
“We are treasure hunters and artists,” said Ploog. “We have new and old treasures to decorate homes and gardens and we also offer dried flowers, pods, sticks and preserved floral arrangements.”
“Currently we are playing with air plants – and all of the wonderful ways these interesting creatures can be displayed,” she said. “We combine these, and other plants, with found objects like old teapots and driftwood.”
The two were attracted to the space during a visit to Antique Alley in the basement of the building.
“The 42nd Street Station is a Hollywood fixture, most of the businesses have been here for over 20 years,” said Ploog. “My sister needed a studio space and I wanted a shop, so we signed the lease.”
“The space was big and bright when we leased it, but we wanted a more intimate warm environment for our customers,” she said. “We added walls and beams in earthy colors. We are making adjustments and improvements all the time. We are really into celebrating the senses and try hard to address them all with music, a water fountain, scented candles and lots of lovely things to look at. We want people to feel good in our shop.”
“We created this business out of necessity,” said Ploog. “We had too much awesome stuff. Not only do we collect for the love of it, but my sister also creates sculptures using these found objects – so we needed to find an outlet for her passion.”
“We want to offer people a small oasis, a place to get ideas, feel good and eventually maybe even take a class and learn how to make a found-object necklace or create a dried-flower centerpiece. We are ever changing and evolving. Who knows what next week will bring?”
Ploog plans a grand-opening celebration for November in collaboration with Melat Asfaw, who is renovating the hair salon next door. The new salon is called Melat, and the party is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 7
