United Neighborhoods for Reform, an inter-neighborhood, citywide group formed two years ago to reduce the growing number of home demolitions in Portland, is distributing informational door hangers to help residents living close to demolition projects and homes undergoing major renovation to understand their rights.
The group claims city and state agencies fail to manage and properly oversee regulations regarding demolitions and major renovations. In a news release, the group stated, “We hope to provide this information in the form of door hangers distributed to houses within 150 feet of proposed single-house demolition and major remodel sites, so neighbors are aware of their rights and can help alert agencies of potential non-conformance by contractors and developers.”
UNR has invited other organizations interested in having a supply of the door hangers to distribute and are asking for approximately 30 cents per door hanger to defray the cost. “At minimum, we hope organizations will recognize the value of this information to the public, and distribute it in the most effective means they have at their disposal,” UNR added in the release.
