Executive Director, Hollywood Theatre
Proudest professional moment: The lighting of our new marquee in 2013!
First job: Clean up crew for the Summerfest Music Festival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Favorite thing about neighborhood: I love all of the huge fir trees surrounding our house in Concordia.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: The Hollywood Theatre, of course!
Favorite movie: That is a impossible question to answer for someone who runs a movie theater! I will say that the best film viewing experience I had all year (and perhaps in my entire life) was seeing “2001: A Space Odyssey” on 70mm at the Hollywood this past spring. I am also looking forward to our screening of Buster Keaton’s “The General” with a live score by the Alloy Orchestra next summer as part of the Hollywood’s 90th anniversary celebration (it is also the 90th anniversary of “The General”, which was shot in Cottage Grove.)
Music of choice: Most anything available at Mississippi Records.
Favorite place to eat: Autentica at Northeast 30th & Killingsworth.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: Can I say Hollywood Theatre? Plus Velo Cult, Moon & Sixpence and Fleur de Lis.
Motto: Drama is for the big screen.

Owner of Pure Barre Portland, Lloyd
Works: Lloyd District on 15th and Broadway.
Lives: Northeast Portland.
Plays: Alberta, near my house. Great food, drinks, shops.
Proudest professional moment: Opening a brand-new business last November.
First job: Vet Technician for seven years. I love animals!
Favorite thing about neighborhood: The people and convenience. I know many of the owners who also have local businesses on Broadway and everyone is very sweet and supportive. There’s so much to offer on Broadway. For a woman coming to our studio, they can get in their workout and head to Night Bird PDX for their salon needs. There’s Plumeria for your mani/pedi. Ken and his wife own it. Fantastic service. Katie from Sweet Jayne can help you grab some gear for a night out on the town and Blossoming Lotus across from our studio has the perfect healthy snacks for after a Pure Barre class.
Fun fact: I love to sing! I was big into theater growing up. I was in several shows but my favorite was playing the character Texas from Cabaret after High School one summer. One of the best memories.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: Grabbing groceries from the store and making a new dish I’ve never made before. Experimenting. Hanging out with friends.
Favorite movie: Labyrinth with David Bowie and Serendipity with John Cusack.
Music of choice: Journey is my all-time favorite band. I love music that has meaning. I’m a very emotionally driven person and music for me is what drives me. You generally won’t find me doing anything without music. I love all kinds of music but a few favorites would be: Kylie Minogue (Thanks to my best friend Zubin), Lady Gaga (HUGE FAN), any 80s jams. Some country, classical.
Favorite place to eat: Petite Provence and Milk Jar are two of my favorites. You can’t go wrong with Capital Grill. Bamboo Sushi. I also love a place that has a good cocktail.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: Besides the ones I listed above: Great Wine Buys. They have a great selection of wine and are super awesome! Swift. Great post work snacks and Mason jar drinks. Must try! Postal Annex for my shipping and copy needs. These guys get us taken care of. Peet’s Coffee. I love the coffee here but the energy from the staff is contagious.
Motto/Inspirational quote: “Commit to the discomfort of being at your edge.” This quote is on my laptop and I see it everyday. It continues to push me in different ways and to keep growing every day as an owner and individual.
Kay Newell ‘The Light bulb Lady’
Owner and manager of Sunlan Lighting on Mississippi Ave.
Also active in the Boise Neighborhood
Proudest professional moment: When a movie was run in the Clinton Theater starring me and my sons. A couple of college gals took video of me and created a short film that won an award. The girls put together a lot of my one liners and the audience just laughed at the one liners for ten of the 15 minutes. The sad part is, that is what comes out of my mouth. I guess I should be more prim and proper. (Not as much fun.)
First job: A hundred years ago: baby-sitting, which included washing the supper dishes and cleaning the kitchen after I put the kids to bed. No TV to watch. I took a kid entertainment kit with me to keep little ones involved before bed time. All that for 35 cents an hour.
Favorite thing about your neighborhood: The people.
Fun fact: I get people visiting my Sunlan store from all over the world. We do live in a connected world.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: My house. I built a custom handicapped house for myself. An evening enjoying my space is wonderful.
Favorite movie: The last movie I saw was about me. Before that, a Star Wars movie years ago.
Music of choice: Classical; country; 50s, 60s and 70s.
Favorite place to eat: There are too many dining choices on Mississippi to have a favorite.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: Sunlan. That is where I spend the most time.
Motto/Inspirational quote: I say to customers, “How can I light up your world?” or “How can I light up your life?” I often add, “I do it with light bulbs.” Sometimes I get a reply. “He or she lights me up.” I hope people recognize the many people and things that light up their life.
