Our new Neighborhood Stars feature is designed to shine a little light on the people you see every day, working, living and playing in our Northeast and North Portland neighborhoods. If you’d like to be a neighborhood Star, or know someone who would, you can request a survey by emailing ofni.1498263487swen-1498263487rats@1498263487snikr1498263487epdet1498263487.
Co-Owner, Director, Small Wonders School
Works: Hollywood and Alameda/Beaumont
Plays: All over Northeast
Proudest professional moment: Growing our school and having a chance to build out a space to the vision that has been in my head for some time. Now we have a team of more than 15 fabulous teachers, a new center location, and our smaller, sweet program run by the darling Quinlyn Wright. Dream!
First job: A teacher’s aide at a preschool!
Favorite thing about neighborhood: The families! We’ve been lucky enough to get to know many of the young families of Northeast Portland and they are a creative, fun and vibrant bunch.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: On an adventure with our toddler Adelaide and 9-month-old Teddy and home by … 7:00.
Just Watched: Master of None on Netflix
Favorite place to eat: The toddler usually picks: Por Que No or La Buca or Thai Seasons.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: Beanstalk Children’s Resale or SpielWerk Toys or The Children’s Place bookshop.
Stories I’d like to see in the Hollywood Star: Family features. I also love all the small business success stories.
Owner and Bra Whisperer, The Pencil Test
Proudest professional moment: At least once per week, a customer tells us that we are fundamentally changing her life by finding her a bra that fits. That’s definitely why I started the business and why I keep coming back. We were also finalists for an industry-wide award (for customer service) and I was able to attend the awards dinner in NYC.
First job: Movie theater in Wilsonville
Favorite thing about neighborhood: I love the mix of residential and commercial areas. I also like the proximity to the rest of the city, in case I ever need to go there!
Fun fact: I’m a fourth-generation Oregonian. I’ve slept in the Ice Hotel in Sweden.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: My couch. Saturday is usually the busiest day at the shop, so I’m knackered.
Favorite movie: A Room With a View, Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Music of choice: Bluegrass, alt-Country.
Favorite place to eat: Back to Eden Bakery on Alberta Street.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: Back to Eden – I’m allergic to milk, so baked goods can be difficult, but I can eat everything here! I love Amelia’s because she has a great mix of casual and dressy outfits, at good prices and in a wide variety of sizes. Frock has so many frocks I can’t even. If I need a gift, Greenbeans books (great advice about buying for kids) and Red Sail are fantastic.
Motto/Inspirational quote: With great bras comes great responsibility.
Stories I’d like to see in the Hollywood Star: I’m a sucker for local history!
Acupuncturist, Owner of Blossom Clinic
Proudest professional moment: Every time one of my fertility patients has a baby it is a proud professional moment for me. I feel really lucky that way!
First job: Coat Check Gal at my family’s catering hall in Long Island, New York at the age of 13!
Favorite thing about neighborhood: I love the surprises along Northeast Broadway. I’ll be on a walk and find businesses that I never knew existed and then I go back again and again.
Fun fact: I love to sing but I have a Karaoke-Phobia. Is that a real thing?
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: I love going out on date nights with my husband, Joe, and exploring new places all over Portland. I love good food and will try anything.
Favorite movie: The Godfather
Music of choice: I love all kinds of music but my Spotify mixes these days are mostly Alternative Rock, Indie Rock and Acoustic Pop.
Favorite place to eat: My kitchen, of course! Second to that, we all love Asian food in my family so we indulge in Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese quite often.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: Broadway Books, Shop Adorn, Eb & Bean, Barre3 … and of course Blossom Clinic!
Motto/Inspirational quote: With all of the hard things going on in the world right now I’ve been focusing on cultivating love in my relationships and everything that I do.
