Nancy Fedelem and her team at Fang and Feather pet supply in the Kenton neighborhood and Salty’s pet supply on Mississippi Avenue have raised more than $1,200 to donate to Multnomah County Animal Service’s Dolly’s Fund, through their annual Pet Photos with Santa event. The Fang and Feather fundraiser was held on Saturday, December 5 and the Salty’s event was Sunday, December 6.
Dolly’s Fund supports care for abandoned animals in need of medical treatment. Donations made to the fund help provide veterinary medical care for animals in need of surgery – or special care and attention – before they can be placed in a new home.
The fund is named for a dachshund who arrived at animal services exhibiting signs of severe mistreatment and neglect. Despite obvious medical problems, shelter staff and the veterinary hospital team were immediately captivated by the dog’s spirit.
“Dolly was in pretty bad shape when she arrived at the shelter,” said Dr. Meghan Romney, head of shelter medicine. “Everyone who cared for her was touched by her sweet disposition and spirit.”
Dolly made a full recovery and was adopted by a shelter staff member. Multnomah County’s animal hospital medical team triages every one of the nearly 7,000 pets that are cared for each year at the shelter.
Fedelem, who makes a very convincing – but skinny – Santa, believes her annual event provides a great opportunity for pets who are well-cared for and loved to lend a “paw” to animals who are less fortunate.
“It’s heartwarming to see all the pets come in for their photo,” said Fedelem. “And know that the contributions their owners make will be going to such a wonderful and important charity.”
