The Northeast Community Center, a local non-profit community center, has established a tradition of partnering with other non-profit agencies to serve its neighbors and strengthen its community. For ten successful years the NECC has partnered with Albertina Kerr in December to provide gifts from a giving tree to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. The NECC members look forward to the giving tree that appears in the lobby each December, and the request gift tags quickly disappeared again this year.
This month, the NECC is partnering with Janus Youth Programs. Janus Youth Programs provides services to young people in need, ages 14 to 24 years, including runaways, homeless youth, teen parents, and abused youth requiring residential treatment. Janus Youth Programs also include Village Gardens, a small pilot farmers market featuring neighborhood food producers from the New Columbia community.
From January 8 through January 22, the NECC is holding a drive to collect blankets, coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. Janus will distribute these warm items to youth in need. Knitters from the NECC have been busy making items for these young people. The community is asked to join the NECC in this project by bringing clean, gently used or new blankets and coats, scarves, hats and gloves to the Center at 1630 N.E. 38th, January 8 – January 22.
