Barb Attridge and Karen Fishel, the founders of Dress for Success Oregon, have been named Portland First Citizens 2016.
They started the first Dress for Success organization on the West Coast 17 years ago to empower women to achieve economic independence. The Portland office is at 1532 N.E. 37th Ave., Suite B
Volunteers, staff members and employees of local supporting companies help women, referred by local non-profits or aid groups, gain confidence and support for finding employment. As the name implies, assisted women select a professional wardrobe and gain grooming tips, job-hunting help and interview coaching.
Attridge and Fishel will be recognized in May at the 88th annual Portland First Citizen banquet at The Nines Hotel.
The pair started Dress for Success in 1998 in the Pearl after Fishel saw a magazine article about the program. She called her good friend Attridge to tell her about it.
Before Dress for Success, Fishel was in marketing at Nike. Attridge was a CPA at Tri-Met. They met 30 years ago in a Career Maker workshop they took to explore new career options.
Attridge has retired from Dress for Success Oregon but remains with some activities. Fishel continues on the organization’s board.
