Danelle Denstone and Gretchen Olsen are the new co-owners of Bikram Yoga Fremont Street, behind Pizza Nostra in Beaumont Village. The studio has been open in that location since 1999 and has had several owners since Michael Harris originally opened the doors. The most recent owner, J Michael Langenes, sold the business to Denstone and Olsen at the beginning of the year.
“This studio definitely has an amazing and energetic history,” said Olsen. “It has been and continues to be a safe space for healing for so many. All students are welcome and Bikram yoga is for everyone. Just like the neighborhood itself, our yoga studio is a community. It is our yoga family.”
The studio offers 26 Bikram yoga classes per week. All are beginner level. It also offers yoga products for sale, including yoga clothing for men and women, mats and towels.
“We absolutely love the Beaumont area,” said Olsen, who recently returned to the neighborhood after living here from 2005 to 2011. “It is amazing to be able to walk to work. We were fortunate to get into this business at the perfect time. J Michael was ready to transition in to the next phase of his life and we were ready to pick up where he left off. The whole transition has been a divinely guided exchange and we could not be more thrilled on how this all came to be.”
“It started one afternoon when my 8-year-old was sitting in the studio with J Michael while I was teaching,” said Olsen. “He told J. Michael that ‘Someday my Mom and Danelle are going to have their own studio.’ This struck a cord with J. Michael and led him to ask us if we’d be interested. It is such a sweet story.”
“Danelle and I have had very similar and parallel lives which makes this partnership very unique and special,” said Olsen. “We are both from Michigan, we both lived in San Diego and we both worked at Southwest Airlines for many years. We both have one son just about the same age. Danelle’s son Ethan is seven and my son Vaughn is eight. They have become great friends just as we have. Though we had all of these parallels, we didn’t actually meet each other until a class here at the studio about nine years ago. We continue to learn of other similar life experiences as we are working together as friends and business partners.”
Olsen has a background in sports and customer service. She was an avid runner in high school and received a scholarship to play volleyball at Eastern Michigan University. Her background in sports has played a role in her interest in a healthy and balanced lifestyle. She attended her first class at Bikram Yoga Fremont Street in the spring of 2006 and began Bikram yoga teacher training in the spring of 2013.
Denstone began her practice at Bikram Yoga Fremont Street in 2001 and became a teacher in the fall of 2006. She has nine years of teaching experience, is a certified massage therapist and a Reiki master and teacher. Her knowledge of the human body extends to a diverse therapeutic massage practice that includes sound healing and Celtic shamanism, with a foundation in the study of runes.
