The Hollywood Theatre will be getting some new neighbors this spring. Lots of them. In addition to Laughing Planet landing just down the street, Little Axe Records, Pat’s Pantry, Ray’s Ragtime and Vivienne Kitchen & Pantry will all be opening their doors near the theater in the coming weeks.
Robin Wheelright will be opening Vivienne Kitchen & Pantry immediately next to the theater, serving breakfast, lunch and early evening food and drink in the 775-square-foot former home of Mudd Coffee at 4128 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Wheelright secured the space in mid-February and has undertaken a cosmetic remodel, including new paint, lighting, and furniture.
“The space will be clean and modern, with just the right amount of vintage to make it feel warm and inviting,” said Wheelwright. “We are scheduled to open on April 15 – and we’ll get close – but keep a lookout, as you may see us operating a few days early with a soft opening.”
“The project is the culmination of four years work, designing and envisioning a beautiful cafe that will grow community and support a local food economy. The name ‘Vivienne’ was selected to represent a French grandmother, and the space is designed to feel like you are in her open, light kitchen.”
After years of consulting in the environmental field, Wheelright decided to approach the social and environmental problems of the industrial food complex by creating a restaurant. She has studied business, run a catering company and worked as a line cook – most recently at Laurelhurst Market – to prepare for opening her own space.
“Our goal is to source our produce and meat seasonally and locally and to offer simple standards executed to be both delicious and beautiful,” said Wheelright. “Breakfast porridge, egg sandwiches, soups, cheese boards, specialty cocktails, juices, coffee and tea. There’s nothing more important than nourishing our bodies and the planet by eating well and Vivienne strives to be an example of that effort.”
“When we were offered the opportunity to take over this space, we knew it was the right choice,” said Wheelright. “The outstanding architectural details of the shop and the vibrant dense walk-able Hollywood neighborhood were key selling points. We’ve been friends and customers at Velo Cult for years and love that we are right off the Tillamook bicycle route. We’ll be riding that route on our commute from North Portland.”
Vivienne Kitchen & Pantry will be open on Tuesdays through Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will begin opening for evening hours later in the spring. For more information call 503-384-2473 or visit viviennepdx.com.
