The Hollywood Theatre will be getting some new neighbors this spring. Lots of them. In addition to Laughing Planet landing just down the street, Little Axe Records, Pat’s Pantry, Ray’s Ragtime and Vivienne Kitchen & Pantry will all be opening their doors near the theater in the coming weeks.
About a half-block west of the theater and across the courtyard from the Hollywood Apartments, Tom Leiner and Pat Milliman will open the first Portland outpost of their popular Astoria spice shop, Pat’s Pantry, Spices and More, in the former home of the Artistic Portland Co-op Shop (and before that Mary Catherine’s) at 4042 N.E. Sandy Blvd. They’ve hired Northeast neighbor Jocelyn McAuley, a former research assistant and avid cook, to work at the shop.
We are just waiting for the flooring to be replaced. Everything else is done,” said Milliman. “We’ll offer spices, herbs, hand-mixed blends, loose teas and an assortment of mostly local packaged goodies: Red Ridge Farm olive oil, Portland Ketchup, NW Elixir, Marshall’s Haute Sauce, Kelly’s Jelly and Blossom Vinegar to name a few.”
“We purchase in small quantities so that product moves off the shelves quickly and spices are fresher,” said Milliman. “We do not add any preservatives or anti-caking agents and the majority of our blends are hand-mixed, in-house in small batches. We grind spices like cumin, coriander and cardamom in-house weekly. We all love to cook, love to talk about food and are happy to answer questions. If we do not carry a particular spice we will do our best to see if we can source it. We are independently locally owned and operated. We are committed to the communities where we are located.”
“We are excited to see Providore open down the street,” said Milliman. “We love the Ocean and Zipper and Pip’s Donuts. We are looking forward to exploring many more local businesses.”
“We are both escapees from the corporate world,” said Milliman. “Myself from banking and Tom from high tech. We were looking for a business we could do together. When I left my corporate job I worked for a chain spice shop. I met Tom and he was intrigued by the business, so we moved to Astoria and opened our first shop.”
Pat’s Pantry will be open Mondays through Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information call 503-298-7294 or visit www.patspantryastoria.com.
