The Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood association is forming a Tree Team and is seeking volunteers to help with a street tree inventory. Beaumont is one of 16 Portland neighborhoods participating in the 2016 Portland Urban Forestry street tree program. Other Northeast neighborhoods forming teams include Alameda, Grant Park, Hollywood, Humboldt and Rose City Park.
The goal of the project is to help maintain and expand Portland’s urban forest by inventorying all street trees in the city and using that information to develop and implement future planting and maintenance plans.
The Beaumont inventory will be conducted this summer and a report will be available for neighbors in the fall.
Volunteers are needed for this summer’s inventory and four inventory days are scheduled. On inventory days, teams will walk assigned sections of the neighborhood and collect data on trees in the city right-of-way, including parking strips, sidewalk cutouts, medians and bioswales.
“Participation in the street tree inventory is not only a great opportunity to help expand and maintain Portland’s urban forest, but also to explore your neighborhood, to learn more about trees and to meet neighbors who are interested in preserving and enhancing the health and beauty of the neighborhood and the city,” said team organizer Jeff King. “Students are welcome to participate, and so are volunteers from other neighborhoods.”
Information about the citywide inventory project is available at www.portlandoregon.gov. A signup sheet is posted on this site to register for team leader training. Later this month, Urban Forestry will post the full schedule of all neighborhood inventory days with signup sheets for volunteer team leaders, data recorders and arborists.
