Kenai Red Fish Company is a community supported fishery run by a Northeast Portland father-daughter team who offer Alaska-caught sockeye salmon to Portland consumers.
Of all the five Pacific salmon species, sockeye, or “red” salmon, is favored by chefs and foodies for its outstanding rich flavor, red color and firm texture. Sockeye also has health benefits as the fish are high in anti-oxidants and Omega-3.
From late June into August, Kenai Red’s founder Clint “Skiffman” Benson calls the port city of Homer, Alaska, home where he fishes the local sockeye salmon run. Benson brings the best of the catch home to Portland.
Benson’s daughter Allison works in Portland to manage consumer outreach and events, which often include serving samples of smoked Kenai Red sockeye at farmers markets and special events.
About Kenai Red Sockeye
Each summer in Alaska, sockeye salmon return from the ocean to the river in which they were born. The different salmon runs each have their own unique characteristics. Kenai Red Fish Company’s sockeye is ocean caught near the mouth of the Kenai Peninsula’s Cook Inlet. This premium sockeye run averages 900,000 fish (as compared to the 40 million Copper River run).
Kenai Red sockeye is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council and also is on the Monterrey Bay Aquarium’s SeafoodWatch “safe” list.
Kenai Red Fish’s sockeye is available fresh in Portland markets, including New Seasons, Green Zebra and Flying Fish Co.
The Kenai Red sockeye arrives from boat to local stores within 48-72 hours.
Kenai Red Fish also offers pre-purchased Sockeye Shares that offer affordable prices for a year-round salmon supply in exchange for advance purchase that helps fishermen cover costs. The Sockeye Shares are flash-frozen in a process that locks in freshness and the sockeye’s firm texture. A whole Kenai Red sockeye weighs an average of 6-7 pounds. Sockeye Shares are sold in both 10- and 20-pound sizes, and Kenai Red packages the salmon in convenient dinner-size portions. The 20-pound share can be scheduled for two deliveries – half in fall 2016 and the other half in the early winter 2017. Kenai Red Fish Company also offers a 3-pound smoked sockeye share.
