For the third year running, the Northeast Community Center helped our neighbors get fit and stay healthy by hosting a Summer Wellness Challenge. As part of the Summer Wellness Challenge, the NECC offered fitness classes and outdoor activities like track workouts at Grant Park, and the camaraderie of others who commit to engaging in regular exercise during June, July and August.
The Summer Wellness Challenge is not a competition. Instead, the NECC created a unique earned-points system in which participants set individual wellness goals and have opportunities to join others in meeting their own personal goals. This summer’s challenge has more than 75 participants who earn points by running or walking, swimming, biking, attending fitness classes, or staying active for at least 30 minutes each day. Bonus points are given for trying a new class, signing up for an event such as a 5k walk or bike ride, or attending bonus workouts offered by the NECC. At the end of the challenge, participants will measure their individual point totals against their goal.
Local businesses have generously donated prizes to support challenge participants who are all entered in a drawing to win a Whole Foods gift basket, a massage from Concordia Chiropractic, or a date night dinner at Soul Kitchen followed by a movie at the iconic Hollywood Theatre, and Adidas gave all participants employee store passes.
Fitness expert Fred DeVito said, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” This summer, NECC participants have certainly been challenged, and they are taking positive steps to support their health and strengthen the bonds in their community.
