After more than 40 years in the same location, Rick and Tammy Slagter’s Natural Furniture store will be moving from 800 N.E. Broadway in the Lloyd District to 7960 S.E. Stark St. in the Montavilla neighborhood.
The neighborhood institution’s longtime retail space will be converted to office space for a new tenant. The Slagter’s Montavilla shop opened on August 1 and Natural Furniture will be open at both locations until October 15, when the Broadway store will close for good.
“We’ll miss our wonderful neighbors, Frank’s Noodle House – right next door – and Cotton Cloud, as well as the entire Lloyd community,” said Rick Slagter. “Our Stark location is brand new and we were able to start from scratch and make it our own. We are excited to have our business in the beautiful Montavilla neighborhood. There are many great places nearby, including our next-door neighbors, Eco Baby and Townshend Tea. Across the street, we’ll have Country Cat, Ya Hala, the Observatory and many more amazing shops. It took us about two months to get the space ready. Our new landlords oversaw the work and they were great to work with.”
Previous owner Harry Dichter opened the business at the Broadway location in 1975 and Rick started working there in 1978, after moving from Phoenix. Rick bought the store in 1983 when Dichter retired. He met Tammy when she worked at the video store across the street and they were married in 1991. The couple lives in the Montavilla neighborhood.
“Our mission statement has always been to sell high-quality products that will withstand the test of time,” said Slagter. “We sell fully-assembled, unfinished and finished furniture. All solid wood, with the option to choose custom finishes. Our inventory includes bookcases, dressers, chests, beds, desks, chairs, benches, stools, tables, media consoles, rockers and children’s furniture. All our furniture comes from local craftsman and trusted national companies. We love natural furniture. It’s all quality, solid-wood furniture, so we don’t do any ‘hard-selling.’ Our furniture sells itself. Our salespeople don’t push sales, they just answer questions and sell people what they want.”
The business model hasn’t changed much since 1983: an eco-friendly showroom offering affordable, finished and ready-to-finish furniture made from heirloom-quality solid wood.
“We’ll be running a clearance sale at the Broadway store through October 15 to empty the store of furniture and fixtures – with 10- to 50-percent off everything,” said Slagter. “We’d like folks to help us clear out our inventory – so we don’t have to move it all. At the same time, we’ll be running a grand opening sale at the Stark store to give people a chance to come in and check out our new store.”
Hours at both shops are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 503-284-0655 or visit www.naturalunfinishedfurniture.com.
