Begin Pilates and Yoga, at 2393 N.E. Fremont Street in the Alameda neighborhood, will hold an open house on Saturday Oct. 1 from noon to 3:00 p.m. The studio, owned by Irvington neighbors Maria and Danny Mankin, opened in the new Lyon’s Court building last January. Maria, a former circus artist with experience in bodywork and movement, has been teaching Pilates for more than 15 years. Danny, who has trained in Iyengar, Yin and Gentle yoga, has been teaching yoga for almost ten years.
The event will offer free beverages, healthy snacks and demonstration classes of all Begin’s programs including two unique classes – Grace Pilates Method and Yoga for the Inflexible Guy – as well as Pilate Mat, Springwall, Reformer and Gentle Yoga.
“It’s a chance to connect with our community and our neighbors and remind them that we’re here,” said Danny Mankin. “People drive by every day on Fremont, but might not know that we’re around the corner on the 24th Ave. side of the building. Maria and I pride ourselves on the accessibility of our programs. We want to help people understand that yoga and Pilates aren’t just for young, buff hard-bodies – but can be beneficial for everyone.”
Maria originally developed the Grace Pilates Method to help her 83-year-old mother, who couldn’t get out of a chair or lie on the ground to exercise. The method uses a patented ball chair to adjust to the spine’s natural curves. The ball offers a low-impact program, designed specifically for individuals with limited mobility due to age, injury or surgery, with the goal of improving overall mobility, core strength and balance.
About a year ago, Danny added a class just for men on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m.
“Yoga for the Inflexible Guy is a course I teach specifically for men with limited flexibility,” said Mankin. “In my time doing yoga, I’ve observed that many men seem to think yoga is too difficult for them or just for women. My class uses chairs and props to gently assist and support men as they practice yoga poses – mixed with breathing and meditation for the calming and relaxation of mind and body. The class is just for guys. I find it allows them to be a little more relaxed and not feeling that they have to impress the ladies. I also teach a mixed class called Gentle Yoga which uses some of the same methods for both men and women.”
