It’s estimated that more than 300 single-family Portland homes are demolished each year, producing thousands of tons of waste. To counter that trend, new guidelines for removing existing structures are designed to protect health, provide additional construction jobs and generate affordable used building materials for re-sale. The new deconstruction ordinance will require projects seeking a demolition permit of a house built in 1916 or earlier or of a designated historic resource to fully deconstruct those structures.
At the same time, Portland’s Bureau of Development Services recently launched a map of demolition permit activity within the city. The map includes demolition permit activity for single family dwelling and duplex demolitions year-by-year back to 2005. The map can be viewed at www.portlandoregon.gov.
