Retiring after ten years as president of the Hollywood Neighborhood Association in late October, Jo Schaefer commended retiring secretary Bob Ueland as, “…being here since the beginning.” Ueland, who handed secretarial duties over to Schaefer, has been a member of the board since 1976. Shaefer herself was the object of similar accolades from Ueland and other board members.
The comments came toward the end of the association’s October meeting at the Hollywood Senior Center where officer elections resulted in Jeff Mast elected president, Ian Timm treasurer and Schaefer secretary. Following the meeting, where Schaefer and Ueland were presented gift certificates and ball caps, attendees retired to Magnolia wine shop on Sandy Boulevard for a less formal celebration. Before entering the shop, the pair posed across the street from the Hollywood Theatre marquee, where a tribute to their service lit up the evening sky.
Commenting on the retirements, Central Northeast Neighbors executive director Alison Stoll said that Schaefer’s community service is not limited to the neighborhood association, “Jo serves as a volunteer with Dress for Success, is on the board of Off the Couch Events (an organization for kids and young adults who are differently abled), and she also serves on the Veterans’ Day Parade USO committee and organizes at the Air Show to serve differently abled kids and their families.” Stoll also recognized Ueland’s contributions, “Bob is a former Spirit of Portland Award winner, Hollywood Lion’s Club member and CNN past president and is currently the board chair of Ride Connection.” Stoll expressed confidence that even in retirement Schaefer and Ueland’s influence in neighborhood affairs would continue.
