In November, Alameda neighbor and attorney Gilion Dumas moved the offices of her law firm, Dumas Law Group, closer to home – from the Weatherly building in the Buckman neighborhood to the Hancock Building at 3835 N.E. Hancock Street in Hollywood.
Dumas might be known to some neighbors through www.rosecityreader.com, a book blog she has published online since 2008. She has been practicing law since 1992 and launched her firm in March of 2014. Her team includes associate attorney Ashley Vaughn, who lives in the Roseway neighborhood, and legal assistant Emily Chung, who also lives in the Alameda neighborhood and graduated from Grant High School – where her father Terry Chung was a teacher for many years.
“All three of us live close, so we can walk to our new office,” said Dumas. “We handle a variety of cases, but the primary focus of our practice is representing survivors of sexual abuse and sexual assault. We seek justice for our clients against perpetrators, employers, or organizations that allowed abuse to happen. Right now we have cases in Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Idaho – and have had cases in states across the country. We are honored to represent our clients, because we know how hard it can be for them to come forward. We always listen with respect to their stories, knowing that just speaking up can be the first step to healing as well as to finding justice.”
The interior of the new space in the Hancock building has been painted a cheerful, pale yellow and robin’s egg blue with an inside window added to Chung’s office to allow for pass-through light.
“Our landlord Wayne Stoll from Century Associates, here in the neighborhood, has been wonderfully accommodating about getting our space ready for us in just a few weeks and making our move very easy,” said Dumas. “We love the Hollywood neighborhood because it is so quiet compared to the Central Eastside where our old office was – but there is still so much to do here. Especially this time of year – I’ve already been to two holiday bazaars! We enjoy being so close to the library and six grocery stores. My Cahn and Fleur De Lis are longtime favorites and we are having a great time trying all the other restaurants nearby.”
