Laurelhurst neighbor and Star photographer Judy Nelson passed away this month on January 10.
After retiring from a 30-year career with the Bureau of Land Management in 2004, Judy spent her golden years painting and exploring the arts. With her camera, she found her voice.
She told the stories of our community through the faces of our neighbors. Her compelling, vibrant images brought life to our pages and energized our readers – by shining a light on the businesses, people and families who live, work and play in our neighborhoods.
Collaborating with Kathy Eaton, first on the adventures of Hollywood Hank and later on the Star’s Out and About series, her photos chronicled the life and times of nearly 30 Northeast and North Portland neighborhoods.
“Judy loved to photograph children and dogs,” said Eaton. “We started ‘Out and About’ in January of 2014 in Kenton and finished – 28 neighborhoods later – in Sabin. To honor Judy’s memory, the family suggests donating to the American Cancer Society, the Defenders of Wildlife or another organization. Our Judy is gone, but her strong spirit is free.”
“Judy is the best photographer I’ve ever known,” said Star photographer Jane Perkins. “She taught me a lot about cameras and about people and was very, very nice. I loved working with her and will miss her very much.”
The following slide show represents some of our favorite images from Judy’s work for the Star.
