In late November, Cully neighbor Vanessa Guzman opened a floral business called Portland Bloem in the former Portland Tissue Labs building at 5012 N.E. 42nd Ave. The shop will be open winter hours Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 6:00 p.m.
“I got into the floral and garden industry because of my love for plants and flowers,” said Guzman. “My educational background is in landscape architecture and my work history is filled with estate gardening. My most inspiring job was gardening for quite a few of the McMenamins properties and estates. I was able to work with so many unusual plants and garden scenarios. I also began designing florals for weddings through my home studio, which led to the desire to launch a full-time business.”
After taking the leap, Guzman worked from home for two years.
“It was a dream come true, but eventually I outgrew my basement and greenhouse and it was time to move into something bigger,” said Guzman. “Toting plants and flowers around town to pop-ups and having no set place to meet wedding clients, I decided it was time to open up shop, and what better place than in my own neighborhood?”
Portland Bloem offers florals for weddings, events and everyday, as well as plants and garden design for the home.
“Our style is based on each individual, couple or space,” said Guzman. “We strive to use local products and support other makers in town. It took a little over a month to get our shop ready. It was a grueling process and the space had to be completely overhauled.”
Guzman did the design work for the new space herself.
“I live in the Cully neighborhood and I wanted to contribute and add to the community by keeping my business here,” said Guzman. “Big thanks go to Michael DeMarco and the team at Our 42nd Avenue for finding me the perfect space. I couldn’t have done it without them. We will be opening an outdoor nursery in the adjoining lot this spring. Stay tuned for the opening date.”
