In April, local restaurant pros Casey O’Brien and Eric Schindele, together with chef Jessica Welch, plan to open SouthFork – a southern-inspired restaurant with live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights, and brunch on weekends – in the former Smallwares space at 4605 N.E. Fremont St. in Beaumont Village.
“We love the Beaumont and Alameda neighborhoods,” said O’Brien. “We want to be a neighborhood spot with reasonable prices, where people can come in two or three times a week without feeling like they’re breaking the bank. We’ll never be as big as Jimmy Mak’s was, but we are really looking forward to providing another venue for Portland’s awesome jazz musicians to perform.”
Before opening as Smallwares, the space in the Fremont Commons Building had previously been home to another jazz club with a southern flair, Doc George’s Jazz Kitchen. Doc George’s closed in 2012 and Smallwares closed in late September.
