The nonprofit Abby’s Closet will give gowns and accessories to Oregon and Southwest Washington young women to attend their high school proms with confidence, said Lois Moll, a spokeswoman for the organization.
The 13th annual gown giveaway will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 18, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
The free event will feature more than 6,000 dresses ranging in size from 0 to 26. The dresses have been donated throughout the year by retail shops and individuals across the country, Moll said. High school students must present their student ID or proof of high school registration to enter the event for a free dress and accessory, she said.
Abbey’s Closet was founded as a nonprofit organization in 2004 by a mother and daughter, Sally and Abby Egland, and a group of friends. Their goal was to provide gowns to young women to experience a once-in-a-lifetime event and promote the confidence essential to attaining goals in their future.
Volunteers are needed to help with the event, Moll said. Young women with questions may call the Abby’s Closet message line, 503-722-1524, and visit the website at www.abbyscloset.org.
