The other members of the court were Madison Williams, Madeline Fernley and Kathryn Davidson.
A Portland native, Means is the daughter of Kayla and Lenell Means. The high school senior plans to attend Hampton University to pursue a degree in sports marketing.
“I would like to have a career in marketing or in women’s sports,” said Means. “I have participated in both the Grant Poetry Slam and Grant Youth Basketball. I’ve been a senior mentor to the freshman class for two years. I’m a member of the National Honor Society and Grant Student Leadership. I’m also secretary for the Black Student Union and, as one of the founders of the Equity Team, I helped to create school-wide Race Forward discussions that influenced race talks both state and country wide. I am proud of being able to be a part of the Equity Team, and creating school-wide conversations. Despite the stress and disagreements we’ve had, we continue to create a safe community to talk about uncomfortable topics about race and current events. Race Forward has been growing rapidly and spreading to other schools – and even the White House – in a positive way. It feels good to be part of a school and group that is making such positive changes.”
Means favorite place to visit in the city is Beaumont Middle School.
“Everyone says going back to your middle school experiences is the worst thing you can do in the world,” said Means. “Even though I had plenty of embarrassing and bad experiences during middle school, it also shaped the person I am today. My wonderful teachers – who I built relationships with – helped and guided me along the way, makes returning to the school unforgettable.”
Her favorite Rose Festival event is the Junior Parade.
“I enjoy seeing hundreds of kids smiling with pride,” said Means. “Plus I feel the creativity creates a peaceful environment in the community. Being able to be a part of the Junior Parade with other teenagers, children and adults allows me to share this special experience. I think it’s a wonderful and uplifting feeling.”
Means’ mentor from Unitus Community Credit Union is Debbie Guerra.
