Harvey Scott Elementary School principal Thu Trong snapped photos while all three kindergarten classes braved record mid-February rainfall to plant three trees in Wellington Park adjacent to the school. Portland Urban Forestry’s Gina Dake and Jim Gersbach and Roseway Neighborhood Tree Team’s Catherine Clark, Sandra Rafalik and Anya Packard assisted the students.
To help diversify tree species in the park, children planted two katsura trees and an orange-barked stewartia. Clark said a redwood would be added as soon as a suitable specimen is acquired. The planted trees will lengthen the average projected life of the park’s trees, which are mostly deciduous with an average urban life of fewer than 50 years.
