Practices family medicine with The Portland Clinic East
Works: The Portland Clinic East is in the Kerns neighborhood. Our practice will be moving to 50th and Sandy in 2018, joining with The Portland Clinic Columbia branch to form one branch serving our east side neighbors.
Lives: I grew up in the Alameda neighborhood, and have lived since then in Beaumont/Wilshire, Rose City, and now Laurelhurst neighborhoods.
Plays: My husband and I love to walk and hike, and all of Portland and the surrounding areas are full of lovely opportunities for that. We have enjoyed musical and theater offerings all over town as well.
Proudest professional moment: I feel my deepest satisfaction in the personal relationships I have formed with my patients over many years.
First job: My very first job was picking berries with other fifth and sixth graders in the fields east of Portland in the summers. It was something to do, made us a little money, and got us together for part of the day. My first work as a doctor was with a migrant and community health clinic in western Idaho/eastern Oregon.
Favorite thing about your neighborhood: Walkability. Friendly neighbors. Block parties. Beautiful trees and gardens. Daphne blooming in the spring!
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: One of the numerous great restaurants in the area, with my husband and usually with one or the other of our adult children and spouse
Favorite movie: Too many to choose from!
Music of choice: Jazz and sacred music, 60’s and 70’s oldies, show tunes.
Favorite place to eat: Hard to pick one. Cabezon comes to mind. It will be near our new office when we move.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: My family has loved Hollywood Fitness for years. Kids and adults both.
Motto/Inspirational quote: Treat others as you want to be treated.
Director of programs at the Northeast Community Center
Proudest professional moment: I inherited a varsity girls basketball team that was 4-14 the year before and we went 15-5 – undefeated in league, league champs – and made it to the playoffs for the first time in school history. Great life lessons learned that year for the young athletes.
First job: First ‘real’ job out of college was as customer service manager at Lloyd Athletic Club just down the street.
Favorite thing about neighborhood: Quiet acreage in Vancouver.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: On the golf course with my friends playing a good round.
Favorite movie: Money Ball.
Music of choice: Country.
Favorite place to eat: Flying Pie Pizza off Stark.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: The Northeast Community Center, where I work, the Starbucks around the corner and Whole Foods.
Motto/Inspirational quote: Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.
Vice president of human resources at ACME
Proudest professional moment: I’ve worked on some interesting mergers and acquisitions, which I’ve always enjoyed. However, my proudest professional moment was ironically leaving the workforce to stay home with my kids full-time when they were young. It was great to have that experience and then re-enter the workforce.
First job: I took a year off before I went to college in San Francisco and was a nanny in Boston. It’s still one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.
Favorite thing about your neighborhood: I have the best neighbors. Plus I can walk to lots of places.
Fun fact: When I was 12 my family of eight backpacked through Europe on a budget. It was before backpacking was cool. It was a complete disaster. It did encourage my spirit of adventure.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: Home with my family … so much for my spirit of adventure.
Favorite movie: A Christmas Story and The Mission.
Music of choice: Alternative rock.
Favorite place to eat: Paley’s Place and Fleur De Lis.
Favorite neighborhood businesses: The New Deal Cafe. I waited and waited for them to open 11 years ago and have been going ever since. They have the best staff and it’s a great neighborhood place. I also love the Hollywood Theatre.
Motto/Inspirational quote: Working in a corporation for a long time really turned me off to quotes, mottos and taglines. I have a long list of ones I don’t like though.
Stories you’d like to see in the Star: Our company recently started partnering with Hacienda CDC. I have been so impressed with their mission and staff that are highly dedicated to providing much needed services to families in need. It would be great to share their work with everyone.
